How a Plasma Membrane Relates to Christian Life
“By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the Armour of righteousness on the right hand, and on the left.” 2 Corinthians 6:7

Biology teaches that the main role of the plasma membrane is to let in whatever is needed, and keep out whatever is not. It is also taught that the plasma membrane is used for structural support, which stabilizes various parts of a cell and plays a part in giving animal cells their characteristic shape. One of its components are said to be like military sentries that recognize an invader, which may elicit an immune system attack.

A professional football quarterback named Boomer Esiason once mentioned that his toughest challenge wasn’t on the football field, but in his own home. He and his wife struggle to care for their son, Gunnar, who was born in 1991 with Cystic Fibrosis. Patients with this disease are usually found with destroyed lung passages due to bacterial infections, which are often repeated when the mucous layer becomes thicker and drier. The result of Cystic Fibrosis is a victim with the average lifespan of 29 years, the effects of having a defective plasma membrane.

Lets recall that old hymn from Psalm 46, where the first stanza goes; A mighty fortress is our God, a trusty shield and weapon. He helps us free from every need that hath now overtaken. The old evil foe now means deadly woe, deep guile and great might are his dread arms in fight, on earth is not his equal. In his epistle to the Ephesians (6:11), St. Paul tells us to put on the whole Armour of God, that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. With this said, if we don’t look to God for protection, our Christian lives will become defective and leave us prone to all kinds of evil and many spiritual diseases. Like the Cystic Fibrosis victim, our lives can be cut short too if we don’t trust God and put on His Armour.
