Romans 15:5

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus,

I recently asked someone how they knew they wouldn't fall into temptation and adultery in 10, 15 or 20 years when their marriage becomes familiar and commonplace. The truth is most people just hope it won't happen, hide it when it does and go on. How many stories have you heard of couples falling victim to affairs as they rationalize; 'We just don't love each other anymore'; 'They don't give me sex anymore'; 'We've drifted apart'. ; ' They aren't the person I married'. Most couples; even jokingly, mock their spouse and take liberties at their mates expense. Isn't that the scene our ridiculous pop culture has convinced us is the norm? The ignorance of such people allows the enemy a foothold, ground for division.

When was the last time you heard someone brave enough to proclaim happiness in marriage. 'I love my wife, she is amazing!'; 'My wife and I have amazing passion for one another'; 'I don't need to look at that pin up, I have a beautiful woman at home for me to call my own'. If yoou want people to know you are a Christian and are different, proclaim success in marriage, that will turn some heads. Trust me. I once had a meeting with a few young ladies from our corporate office. They arrived a little early and caught me reading the newspaper. They asked if I was looking at the 'Sunshine Girl'. I told them I don't look at that sort of thing as I have my own sunshine girl at home. One of them, perhaps didn't have her coffee that morning assumed my wife was actually a pin up model. Her co-hort got the message and was put back, 'I've never heard a man say that before'.

It is no accident that Paul included endurance, encouragement and unity in the same sentence. You will not endure without encouraging one another. Most importantly, to endure the long years of marriage there must be unity amidst a man and wife as you follow Jesus. Proclaim the victory Jesus paid for in your union that the enemy will hear it. I have personally lived a wonderfully blessed marriage since I began telling Satan how incredible a marriage the Lord has given me and in that it has become increasingly worthy of those proclamations. He is eternally faithful.

Dear Lord, thank You for the covenant of marriage and the blessings attributed when You are at the center. Lord give us the courage to proclaim Your truth about marriage. That it is bliss, it is fulfilling, mind blowing, awesome, life giving, hard work, strengthening, exclusive and most importantly; grows us closer to You. In Jesus' name.

Amen.
