Today's "Marriage" Scripture by Jason Hunt *August 29, 2009*

Matthew 5: 37
Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won't.’ Anything beyond this is from the evil one.

  Ashley recently challenged me on something I had committed to that had yet come to fruition. This led me to reflect on the amount of times I said I was going to do something but didn't. So I set out to observe the same in others. I was amazed at the number of random promises I heard that were not full filled. 'I'll fix this', 'I'll help with that', I'll meet you then', 'I'll call you'
 We recently attended a local amusement park. I heard one irate mother, even before she had entered the park, threaten her children 'if you don't stop we are going home right now'! The kids have obviously learned to call mom's bluff as they continued on with the same poor Behaviour. They didn't go home.
 Jesus reminds us of the value of our word. So little trust existed that things became rather silly. Folks were swearing by the temple, by the gold in the temple, by their own heads even!! Matthew 5: 34-36 But I say, do not make any vows! Do not say, ‘By heaven!’ because heaven is God’s throne. And do not say, ‘By the earth!’ because the earth is his footstool. And do not say, ‘By Jerusalem!’ for Jerusalem is the city of the great King.  Do not even say, ‘By my head!’ for you can't turn one hair white or black.. Jesus lets us know that our Yes or No should be enough. That when we say something will be or has been done, that it is so.
 Why do children ask their parents 'promise?'. Why do people need our reassurances if they trusted our words to be true. As Christians we must walk as Jesus did. David asks the Lord in Psalm 15:1 Who may worship in your sanctuary Lord? Who may enter Your presence on your holy hill? David answers his own question declaring in vs 2 ; those who live blameless lives, who do what is right and tell the truth & vs 4; who keep their promises even when it hurts. (my paraphrase). I don't live up to that standard. Many of us promise something and then don't show up, don't call or make up an excuse. Some tips that may help you parents;
- Most important of all between a man and wife is unity. Get on the same page before you promise or discipline.
- Put careful thought and prayer into your commitments.
- Never over promise - if you can't fulfill it, don't suggest it.
- You have to follow through or you lose credibility. You become the idle threat children do not heed, or the disappointment they get used to.
- Be realistic. If it's discipline; the punishment should fit the crime. We serve a just AND fair God.
- If you can teach your children yes is yes and no is no; good chance they will not know how to lie. Proverbs 22:6 Teach a child in the way they should go and when they are old they will not  depart from it.
- If you want your children to keep their promises ( curfew, abstinence, purity etc...) you'd best keep yours...even if it hurts.

 Lord God in Heaven. Praise Your Holy name. You are a faithful Father. Thank You for keeping promises, praise You that Your Word does not return to us void. Make us men and woman of our word Father. Let us bring You glory as we full fill our pledges, promises and commitments. Forgive us please Lord for falling short, restore us please Jesus to Your glory.
In Jesus' name.
Amen.
