Today's Scripture *September 25, 2009*

Luke 3: 7-9
When the crowds came to John for baptism, he said, “You brood of snakes! Who warned you to flee God’s coming wrath? Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don't just say to each other, ‘We're safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.’ That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones. Even now the ax of God’s judgment is poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire.”

Some people wanted to be baptized by John so they could escape eternal punishment, but they were not really repenting from sin nor were they willing to change the way they lived. John had harsh words for such people. He knew that God values reformation above ritual. Confession of sins and a changed life are inseparable. Faith without deeds is dead (James 2: 14-26). Jesus also spoke harsh words to the respectable religious leaders who lacked the willingness to repent. They wanted eternal life, but they didn't want to repent of their sins. Thus, their lives were unproductive. Turning from sin must be tied to action. Following Jesus means more than saying the right words; it means acting on what He says.

God, we want to be transformed by You.
We want to be fruitful and productive members of Your Kingdom.
Guide us and guard us. May we repent and turn away from our sins.
In Your Name, Amen..

Have a Son-filled weekend!
