Today's "Marriage" Scripture by Jason Hunt *April 23, 2010*
Proverbs 27:23-24
Know the state of your flocks, and put your heart into caring for your herds, for riches don't last forever, and the crown might not be passed to the next generation.
Although this Scripture is often associated with financial planning, it provoked me to ponder my families 'state'. Like a flock or herd, God blesses us with a wife and children and expects us to put our hearts into caring for them. We are charged with raising children to be God fearing, Bible reading, Christ followers. As parents we have a very small window of time (the 'riches') to influence our children. If we are unaware or don't maintain their spiritual health the world can distract and consume their interests, passions and spirits. The crown may not be passed down to the next generation. Proverbs 17:6 Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged; parents are the pride of their children. As our children bless us with grandchildren they begin to realize the value of that 'crown'; their upbringing, they will in turn raise our grandchildren; our 'crowning glory' with those same values. Our children will then be proud of us as parents and desire the same honor from their children. Therein lies the generational blessings of God's wisdom and love in raising families.
Lord You are our Father. You know the state of Your flock at all times. Keep us earthly fathers passionate about our families, that we would discern the health of their relationship with You. That we would lead them with integrity, prayer and obedience. Bless us Father with the crowning glory of generations to come.
