Today's "Marriage" Scripture by Jason Hunt *May 29-30, 2010
Philippians 1:6
And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.
As a husband, father and brother I often find myself asking God "why"? "Why do I have to deal with this?"; "Why does this happen to me?"; "Why can't life be easy?"; "I've made too many mistakes to be called to that!"
In the same way a father teaches his child to ride a bike, go to school on the first day, or drive a car; God wants to grow us, stretch us and teach us.
Imagine the fear Moses felt when God asked him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Moses would have to go back to the land he ran from, face the Pharaoh and least of all try to speak to dignitaries with a studder. Exodus 4:10 But Moses pleaded with the Lord, “O Lord, I'm not very good with words. I never have been, and I'm not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangled.” as Moses faced his fears and went in obedience he learned how to lead. He overcame the fears of self doubt, failure and insignificance. Moses gained confidence, valuable experience and deeper faith that served him as he continued to lead God's people into the wilderness. Exodus 14:13-14 But Moses told the people, “Don't be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.”
As spouses and parents you are facing trials this very day that God has His hand in. Short on cash, family dysfunction, melancholy at work, unrest at home. God is there with us. God finishes what He starts...including you. The Israelites reached the promised land as is God's desire for us.
So we pray as Paul did in Philippians 1:9-11 I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return. May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God.
In Jesus' name. Amen.
